A Ceremony of Carols

Singing Christmas Carols is a long standing holiday tradition.  In the spirit of the season, Kantorei brings to you for the first time the four-part version of Benjamin Britten’s masterwork, A Ceremony of Carols for choir, soloists and harp –one of the most popular holiday pieces on the planet! We’ll also feature prolific American composer Stephen Paulus’ Three Nativity Carols for Choir and oboe, and introduce you to some new versions of familiar favorites by the young Norwegian composer, Ola Gjeilo.  We may well ask you to sing along at the end!

Echoes: Chant and Beyond

For centuries, Chant has been a central compositional style used for meditation and spiritual gatherings. Kantorei explores this age-old art form with early renditions of solo line melodies as well as newer compositions that are chant-based or chant-infused. Featured works include chants by Hildegaard von Bingen; Josquin Des Prez’s chant-based Mass, “Missa Pange Lingua;” British mystic composer John Tavener’s setting of a Jewish matrimonial ceremony, “The Village Wedding;” “Four Motets on Gregorian Chants” by Maurice Duruflé and new works by Eric Whitacre and James Whitbourn.

The Earth Adorned

Kantorei honors Mother Earth with pieces celebrating the splendor of nature. Aaron Copland tells the Creation story in his a cappella masterwork “In the Beginning” for mezzo-soprano and choir. Ralph Vaughan Williams captures a cinematographic look at mountains, the sea and rolling hills in his “Three Shakespeare Settings.” and Felix Mendelssohn’s cheerful “Six Songs to be Sung in the Open Air,” Op.59, will feature the warm and luxurious voices of Kantorei.
